How to configure Early Earthquake Warning (EEW) on your smartphone:

Android

Your Android phone can send alerts about nearby earthquakes of magnitude 4.5 and above using your approximate location. These earthquake alerts are based on data from ShakeAlert, and are currently active in the following US states: California, Oregon, and Washington. This feature is available on Android 5.0 (Lollipop) and above.

To Enable:

  1. Open your phone's Settings app.
  2. Tap Safety & emergency > Earthquake alerts.
    • If you don't find Safety & emergency, tap Location  > Advanced  > Earthquake alerts.
  3. Turn Earthquake alerts on or off.

iOS (Apple)

iPhone users in California, Oregon, and Washington can receive early warnings through their devices. These alerts are delivered through Apple's built-in alert system. This feature is available for iOS version 6 and above.

Here's how it works:

  • Enable Emergency Alerts: Go to Settings > Notifications, scroll down to Government Alerts, and turn on Emergency Alerts.
  • Local Awareness: Ensure "Local Awareness" is enabled within the Emergency Alerts settings.

MyShake App

  • Download and Enable: Download and install the MyShake app from the Apple iOS App Store or the Google Play Store and enable location services.
  • Personalized Settings: Configure the app to receive alerts based on your preferred region and magnitude of earthquakes.
  • Community Reporting: The app also allows users to share their earthquake experiences and see community reports.
  • Global Citizen Science: The MyShake app is part of a global citizen-science based seismic network that contributes to earthquake detection and early warning efforts.
